Identity Through Fashion
In the Spring Semester, I started the “Freedom Through Fashion” project, and this semester I was exploring the same project while refining the concept and images. This semester was challenging because I thought my concept was already refined, but by the end of the semester I understood that I was nowhere near where I wanted to be.
By redefining my 5 Ws and H (what, why, where, when, who, and how), I felt more confident in the direction I wanted the project to go. This course taught me that photography projects have to constantly receive criticism and questioning in their development stage. A project isn't just built in a few weeks; it takes years of refinement for it to evolve.
Identity through Fashion is an editorial photographic project that explores the uniqueness of individual styling and how fashion acts as an expressive tool.
This series will focus on the personal stylistic choices of Black Detroiters. I have always been intrigued by fashion and wonder how people develop their own personal style that stands apart. We are all drawn to styles, colors, textures, and patterns for various reasons. My intention is for the audience to consider why they wear the clothes that they do and consider how they express who they are.
